Wheel of Life Retreat
BUDDHIST EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE ON THE WHEEL OF LIFE AND DEATH
JULY 31, AUGUST 1ST AND 2ND
INDIAN CREEK ZEN FARM, WEDRON, ILLINOIS
Diane Martin, Roshi, will conduct an Institute on the Wheel of Life and Death beginning Friday, July 31st at 7p.m., and continuing Saturday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, and on Sunday from 8:30 am until noon.
Diane is an expert on the Wheel, which was designed by Buddha as a guide to his teachings. There will be seminars on the four aspects of the Wheel: the instinctual hub of greed, hate and delusion; the directional second wheel of evolution and regression; the six realms of existence; the twelve links of dependent origination and Yama, the lord of death.
There will be five presenters on these topics on the Wheel and participants will have access to multiple tutors for one year after the seminar to further their study. Participants should be familiar with the wheel and the twelve links of dependent origination. Students should also be studying under a recognized teacher.
Seiso Paul Cooper, Sensei, From the perspective of the Wheel, our internal and relational worlds find visual expression in the Six Realms: gods, hell, animals, hungry ghosts, asuras (jealous gods), and humans. A being is never trapped in one realm; their actions determine where they will be reborn in the next life. [The next life refers to the next moment of consciousness, the next dharma gate and not to literal birth and rebirth] The six realms are visually depicted as sections of a constantly turning circle with ascending and descending aspects. We constantly oscillate through each realm. Seiso, Sensei will unpack the Six Realms with direct relevance and application to Zen practice.
