Rohatsu 2017

Two Rivers Zen Community

Rohatsu Sesshin

Residential Retreat

Thursday, December 7 – Sunday, December 10, 2017

Rohatsu Sesshin (“Morning Star Retreat”) is the most important retreat of the year. It marks and celebrates Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, expressed vividly and graphically in the Bhavachakra or the Wheel of Life. Rohatsu is a very powerful and deep gathering of individuals dedicated to realizing and expressing the Buddha Way through deep silence, extended periods of sitting and walking meditation, shared meals, liturgy and body-movement practices such as Yoga and Tai Chi.

Seiso Paul Cooper, Sensei and Senior Sangha members will lead Dharma talks and Q & A sessions. Seiso Sensei will provide Dokusan (private practice interviews). Rohatsu is considered to be the strongest sesshin of the year and functions as  a powerful container that supports integration of body and mind and our individuality and oneness with the community and the world. We invite you to join us for all or part of this year’s Rohatsu Sesshin at the lovely Himalayan Institute in Honesdale, P.A. as a way to strengthen, deepen and honor your practice through the shared energy of group practice.

Bhavachakra “Wheel of Life & Death”

The “Wheel” connects directly to Buddha’s enlightenment. He realized the 12 Nidanas or the links of dependent co-origination as the morning star emerged. These crucial links of realization constitute the rim of the The Wheel of Life. This direct connection makes the “Wheel” a most fitting topic of discussion and practice for Rohatsu. It functions as a pictorial representation of cyclic existence or “samsara.” It is comprised of a series of concentric circles that detail how the mind is structured and functions. It serves as a template for mapping out and understanding internal mental processes, the range of emotional and psychological states that contribute to our sense of identity and their behavioral manifestations. We will approach the “Wheel” with an eye toward personal growth and will include applications to everyday life and meditation practice.
