“An Eye on the Tip of Their Tongue: Zen and Poetic Expression”
with Myoki Marcia Nehemiah
Engaging with poetry, both by reading a poem and by writing one, allows us to encounter and deeply experience a fleeting moment of life as it is lived—Just this is it! as the 9th C. Zen Master Yunyan taught. In the Zen tradition, writing a poem is an act that bears witness to an enlightened, ephemeral moment.
Myoki Marcia Nehemiah, poet and lay ordained Zen practitioner, will facilitate a 5-session class to explore the relationship between poetry and Zen Buddhist practice.
When: Tuesdays: May 7, 14, 21, 28, & June 4 from 6-7 p.m.
Where: Two Rivers Zen Community, 76 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Narrowsburg, NY.
In the class, we will consider works from a variety of poets, including ancient masters of the traditional Japanese forms of haiku and waka such as Eihei Dogen, Ryokan, and Han Shan, and contemporary writers of free verse like Jane Hirschfeld, Gary Snyder, W. S. Merwin, Kay Ryan, and William Stafford, among others, and discuss the core Buddhist teachings expressed in their poems. Participants will have an opportunity to give voice to their own awareness of the living moment.
All are welcome. No experience with poetry writing or Zen practice necessary.
Full course, $45 (free for TRZC members); single classes, $10 each. Please register no later than April 30 by emailing marcia@mailhosts.net or calling 570-576-0865. Class size is limited, and early registration is encouraged.
